History

A Pioneer in the Microencapsulation Industry

In 1971, John “Jack” Whitaker received the first Patent for the printing of fragrance containing microcapsules. With this technology the Scratch and Sniff fragrance delivery system was developed.

In 1981 Jack created his own company, Capsular Products Inc. to market and sell the Micro-Scent brand Scratch-n-Sniff fragrance delivery systems. Capsular Products Inc. and a partner company based in Chattanooga, Tennessee invented the “pull-apart” fragrance sampler.  His son Doug Whitaker joined the business and he developed the “pull-apart” sampler for the perfume and fine fragrance industry.

Later, Doug Whitaker founded Aroma Release Technologies and partnered with Orlandi-USA in New York to create  "TruEssence” brand fragrance samplers. This product and partnership remains a leader in marketing and advertising serving the fine fragrance global marketplace. In 2014 A.R.T, Inc. acquired the Micro-Scent brand and delivery systems.

Today, Aroma Release Technologies still remains based in Chattanooga and has recently moved into a new state of the art production and research laboratory facility. The company was built on family values with several family members and longtime colleagues continuing the traditions passed down from Jack Whitaker.
